The foundation of the coat of arms is a diagonally divided shield featuring a red and a blue field. In the red field is a silver walking lamb, an ancient symbol of Jesus Christ—the Lamb of God—which refers to Christ as the Good Shepherd whom the bishop is to follow in his pastoral ministry. The blue field contains a golden anchor, a traditional symbol of hope and the firmness of faith, pointing to the certainty of being anchored in Christ. Behind the shield stands a golden processional cross, expressing the episcopal rank and service to Christ and His Church. Above the shield rests a green episcopal hat with six green tassels on each side, which, according to the rules of ecclesiastical heraldry, denotes the rank of a bishop. Below the shield, a white scroll bears a motto that expresses the spiritual program of the bearer of the coat of arms.
