The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Slovak Historical Institute in Rome, the Diocese of Spiš and the Prešov Self-Governing Region. The curator of the exhibition is Dáša Uharčeková Pavúková.
Guests at Spišská Kapitula were welcomed by Peter Matis, who represented the Bishop of Spiš, Mons. František Trstenský, at the event. In his address, he connected the theme of the exhibition and the artistic legacy of Master Paul with the words of St John Paul II on beauty.
In his 1999 Letter to Artists, St John Paul II recalled Dostoevsky’s well-known idea that “beauty will save the world” and went on to say: “Beauty is the key to the mystery and a call to transcendence.” According to the Pope, art can lead a person from admiration for beauty towards that which transcends them.
Peter Župník’s photographs likewise offer an opportunity to pause and rediscover the work of Master Pavol of Levoča – not merely as an important part of our historical and artistic heritage, but as a form of beauty that, even after centuries, continues to speak to people and open their eyes to something beyond what they can see.
The exhibition will be open to the public at the Spiš Diocesan Museum in Spišská Kapitula until 31 October 2026.It will subsequently be reinstalled at the Slovak Historical Institute in Rome, at Via della Conciliazione 44.
The project is supported by the budget of the Prešov Self-Governing Region.
