The main Jubilee celebration will take place on Saturday, 26 September 2026, at Spišská Kapitula. Cardinal Mario Grech will preside over the celebration on behalf of the Holy Father and will also impart the Pope’s Apostolic Blessing to the faithful.
In his letter, Pope Leo XIV recalls the 250-year journey of the Diocese of Spiš, which, faithful to Christ and His Church, has made its way through history “amid joys and sorrows.” At the same time, he highlights the Jubilee Year as a special time of prayer, gratitude and pastoral reflection.
One of the central messages of the letter is an encouragement addressed to the faithful of the Diocese of Spiš. The Holy Father asks his Special Envoy:
“You will encourage all those taking part in this celebration to keep alive, with renewed strength and new zeal, their hope in the fulfilment of God’s promises.”
These words capture particularly well the meaning of the entire Jubilee Year. Above all, it is an opportunity to thank God for all the blessings that have accompanied the life of the diocese over the past two and a half centuries, while at the same time looking to the future with trust and hope.
The Bishop of Spiš, Most Rev. František Trstenský, received the Holy Father’s letter with great gratitude:
“I see the letter of the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, as a beautiful sign of the closeness of the Successor of Peter to our Diocese of Spiš. I am particularly touched by his call for us to keep our hope alive with renewed strength and new zeal. I look forward to 26 September, when we will be able to share this joy together at Spišská Kapitula, united with the Holy Father and his Special Envoy, Cardinal Mario Grech.”
